Wai Yi Chung (b. 1998) was born and raised in Hong Kong. She graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) in Journalism and Communication in 2020. Then she worked as a graphic designer for media companies and an NGO until 2022, when she moved to the UK. In 2023 obtained an MA in Fine Art from the University for the Creative Arts in the UK with distinction. She has been based in London, working mainly as a painter and printmaker since. Beside being an artist, Wai-Yi is also an advanced Go player. Since the rise of AlphaGo in 2016, she doesn’t view AI as a mere rivalry. With her illogical abstract drawings called “The Entanglement”, she challenges the omnipotent generative image algorithms.
From expressive abstraction to realism, Wai-Yi’s art practice covers everything. Because art is not just a career, it is a way of life, and life is not to be defined, but to live out the definition.
Through different mediums and subject matter, Wai-Yi’s works explore her Hong Kong cultural heritage, decisive moments in her everyday life, and imagination about the future.
